National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program

The overall goals for the National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program are to:

  • Provide CPS Technicians with the technical skills and knowledge to correctly use and install car seats, booster seats and seat belts.
  • Equip Technicians to educate caregivers on how to properly select, use and install car seats and booster seats, and to know when to transition children to seat belts once booster seats are outgrown.
  • Certify Technicians as valuable resources in communities throughout the country.
  • Why become a CPST?

Tens of thousands of individuals have been certified as CPS Technicians and Technician Instructors since the certification program began in 1998. CPS Technicians put their knowledge and hard work to use teaching parents and caregivers how to properly protect their children in motor vehicles and provide “hands-on” assistance to properly use and install car seats, booster seats and seat belts. It is highly recommended that interested students attend a car seat inspection event prior to registering for the class to receive insight on what a CPS Technician does. Child Passenger Safety Technical Update Class

This course was designed to help certified CPS technicians and technicians-instructors stay up-to-date in the ever changing CPS environment and to earn valuable CEUs to use towards recertification.  Participants gain a clear understanding of difficult or often-misunderstood CPS topics, obtain updated or advanced information about changing CPS technology and to learn help correct the errors and misinformation commonly witnessed in the field.

Child Passenger Safety Technician Renewal Testing Course

The 8-hour National CPS Training Certification Renewal Course is a way for once-certified individuals to become certified again. In order to be eligible for this course, the participant must have a CPS profile with a certification status of EXPIRED. There is no limit for how long ago their certification expired.

All students MUST be current in their CPS knowledge and skills and come ready to test! This is NOT an update/refresher class. This course is meant for expired CPS Technicians who have maintained their child passenger safety knowledge and their hands-on skills. It is expected that participants attempting to renew their certifications have stayed involved in CPS programs and activities, have kept up with changes in the field by reading technical updates, attending other CPS classes, and working with non-expired technicians to keep their installation skills current, but who - for one reason or another - allowed their certifications to expire.
