Lisbon Smoke Alarm Project

The Lisbon smoke alarm project was started  with Fire act grant funding in 2004, with the recent depletion of those detectors and the tragedy occurred in our community recently, the companies of the Lisbon Fire Department have joined forces with Safe Kids Maine and, with support of the US Fire Administration Fire Safety Rapid Response grant, will provided project materials to support the project. Additional local sponsorship and donations will be solicited in the community to further enhance and fund the project.

The project will include a door-to-door canvassing effort by members of the Lisbon Fire Department to conduct smoke alarm surveys and provide new batteries and new smoke alarms in homes in Lisbon that currently do not have any.

Facts & figures provided by the National Fire Protection Association

  • A 2008 survey found that 96% of U.S. households had at least one smoke alarm, yet in 2003-2006, no smoke alarms were present or none operated in two out of the five (41%) of the reported home fires.
  • Almost two-thirds of reported home fire deaths in 2003-2006 resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
  • When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected or dead.
  • The death rate per 100 reported fires was twice as high in homes without a working smoke alarm as it was in home fires with this protection.

Funding for the project includes a Fire Safety Rapid Response Grant from Safe Kids USA with support from the US Fire Administration. Additional funding is being sought from the local community to expand the project to reach all residents. If you would like to contribute to the project, you can contact the Lisbon Fire Department at (207) 353-3000 x121.
