Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of childhood injury and
death. The primary focus of Safe Kids Maine is child passenger
safety (CPS). Additional program areas include bicycle helmet
safety and fire prevention.

their vehicle. Each course is five days long, using a
curriculum developed by the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). To learn more about

Child Passenger Safety Technicians current and up-to-date, Safe Kids Maine

Transporting Children Safely in Child Care
Safe Kids Maine contracts with the Maine Office of Child Care and Head
Start to teach classes to licensed child care providers in Maine who
transport children. "Transporting Children Safely in Child Care"
is a four-hour class coordinated through Maine’s Resource
Development Centers (RDCs).
Transporting Children Safely in Ambulances
During ambulance transport, patients are five times more likely to
killed in a crash than if they were in a car. Children are
especially vulnerable, as the ambulance stretcher is not designed to
properly protect them. In collaboration with Maine
EMS, Safe Kids Maine developed a curriculum and conducted
classes throughout the state to inform emergency medical service providers
about safe practices when transporting children.
